Pepi Cubano Sandwiches at Dian Street

I used to live in the section of Edison Street that was near Dian Street but strangely, I never noticed the small signage in this colorful edifice. I only did so when I was walking home after visiting my brother who still resides in the vicinity.

Pepi Cubano Sandwiches is located at 1651 Dian Street. Cuban sandwiches, which consist of variations of ham and cheese, were offered by Florida cafés to Cuban workers way back in the 1800s.

I've walked this street a hundred times or more since I lived in the area for almost eight years before I transferred to Salcedo Village.

Pepi Cubano has been around since 2006. I have a feeling that perhaps, they didn't start the business in this building and transferred only thereafter. I like the colorful facade.

I thought there was a dining area but only takeaway or deliveries are possible. There are six sandwiched to choose from. I decided to get one of each and do a tasting with my brother and cousins.

All sandwiches consisted of pressed loaves and slightly lathered in butter.

Choripan and Chicken.

I don't know if this is really "Cuban" or an offshoot of the popular Boracay sandwich. It was just ok.

The chicken sandwich was also good but not really memorable.

The Cuban Sandwich and Steak.

I was excited to try The Cuban Sandwich. It had ham, roast pork, cheese and yellow mustard. This was quite good.

I actually like the bread which I think is homemade.

The Steak sandwich, which had shredded beef and onions, was also tasty.

Pan de Guyaba Y Quezo and Media Noche.

The Pan de Guyaba Y Quezo brought to mind childhood snacks of pan de sal, cheddar cheese and guava jam. A bite from this sandwich was a trip down memory lane.

The Media Noche or " Midnight " Sandwich is a popular staple served in Havana's bars and clubs around midnight. The ingredients are similar to The Cuban Sandwich but uses a softer bread. Pepi Cubano Sandwiches' version had the same bread with ham, cheese, yellow mustard and pickles or pickle relish.

I had to carefully label the sandwiches for the blog since the sandwiches looked similar.

We had a fun time tasting but unfortunately, there were no " oohs " and " aahhs ". None of my cousins kept the telephone number to call for future orders.

I'm always on the lookout for establishments serving cuisine that isn't of the usual fare. I wish Pepi Cubano Sandwiches longevity in the food business but since they've been around for almost nine years, I think they're doing quite fine.

Cost of Sandwiches : 920.00
